The Often Forgotten Pillar of Health: Social Wellbeing (Plus Travel Tips for HRT Users!)
As we move into the heart of summer, many of us begin to plan trips, days out and a change of pace — and July brings with it an important reminder: it’s Social Health Awareness Month.
We often speak about physical and mental health as if they are the whole story, but social health — our ability to form satisfying interpersonal relationships and maintain meaningful connections — is just as vital. In fact, all three aspects of our wellbeing are deeply connected. When one is under pressure, the others often feel it too.
When Life Gets Tough, Connection Can Suffer
Whether it’s a health diagnosis, the demands of caring for others, workplace stress, or navigating the symptoms of menopause, challenging times often lead us to withdraw. We cancel plans, stop reaching out, or feel like we’ve lost our sense of belonging. This is completely understandable — and yet it’s often when we need support the most.
Strong social connections can:
Boost our resilience and reduce feelings of isolation
Lower levels of anxiety and depression
Improve our immune function and even heart health
Help us find laughter and joy, even in tough times
So this month, I encourage you to reflect: How socially healthy do you feel right now? More importantly — is there one small step you could take to strengthen your connections? A message, a walk with a friend, a cuppa with someone who gets it?
You deserve to feel supported — not just in your health, but in your whole life.
Travelling This Summer? Don’t Forget Your HRT Essentials ✈️
Whether you're heading off to sunnier climates or enjoying a staycation, a little forward planning can help you travel confidently with your Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
Here are some top tips:
✅ Pack your HRT in your hand luggage
Airlines can misplace checked bags — keep your medication with you at all times.
✅ Carry a copy of your prescription
This helps smooth the way through customs and provides back-up if you need to replace your meds while away.
✅ Be mindful of storage
Some HRT products need to be kept below certain temperatures. A small insulated pouch or cool bag can help protect them, especially in hot weather.
✅ Add your HRT to your travel insurance
Many people don’t realise that if HRT isn’t listed as a declared medication, you may not be covered if an issue arises. It only takes a few minutes to update your policy — and it’s worth it for peace of mind.
So this July, whether you’re reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, or simply being kinder to yourself, remember: you don’t have to do life alone. Social health is just as important as any prescription — and it’s never too late to nurture it.
Wishing you a connected and confident summer 🌸
